What I’m doing when I’m not thinking about autism
I’ve seen this on quite a few blogspot blogs, and I find it unfortunate that wordpress doesn’t have the same automatic page feature. But I’ll make do:
Favorite Books
- Notes From Underground (Dosto and I were secretly lovers back in the 1800s. Tell no one.)
- De Profundis (so much anger, so much hate, so much pure love by Oscar Wilde)
- The Picture Of Dorian Grey (sheer genius. ’nuff said)
- A Prayer for Owen Meany (a great look at everyone’s favorite Aspie by John Irving)
- Anything by Donald Miller (for when I’m feeling spiritual)
- A Home at the End of the World (those who don’t cry when finishing a Cunningham work has no heart)
- The Memoirs of Paul Monette (most tender, beautiful books on AIDS ever written)
Favorite Movies
- Must Love Dogs (Despite multiple opinions to the contrary, I maintain that this is not, in fact, a chick flick)
- The Wedding Date (see above)
- Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (Kevin Spacey, John Cusack, and Jude Law sharing a screen. Need I say more?)
- Being John Malkovich (the ultimate trip)
- Mercury Rising (first movie I ever saw with an autistic child. Definite thumbs up)
Must-see TV (if i did watch TV, this is what I would watch)
- Daily Show
- Colbert Report
- Rachel Maddow
- How I Met Your Mother
- Queer as Folk (now only in reruns)
- House
Favorite Music
- “Fire and Rain” by James Taylor (and covered by Dido)
- “Thrown Down”, “Smile at You” and of course “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac
- “Cigarettes and Gasoline” by Emerson Hart
- Any live James Blunt
- “If You Could Read My Mind” by Gordon Lightfoot
Favorite Quotes
- “Let’s stop “tolerating” or “accepting” difference, as if we’re so much better for not being different in the first place. Instead, let’s celebrate difference, because in this world it takes a lot of guts to be different.” Kate Bornstein
- “He did not know whether he had been mad and was now sane, or had been sane for a time and was now mad again.” -Hilton
- “The girl never really lived, and so she has never died. To you at least, she was always a dream a phantom that flitted through Shakespeare’s plays and left them lovelier for its presence, a reed through which Shakespeare’s music sounded richer and more full of joy. The moment she touched actual life, she marred it, and it marred her, and so she passed away. Mourn for Ophelia, if you like. Put ashes on your head because Cordelia was strangled. Cry out against Heaven because the daughter of Brabantio died. But don’t shed tears over Sybil Vane. She was less real than they are.” -Wilde

lol I <3 James Blunt. and I am tickled pink you do too. My ASD boys love SNL and old SNL is their favorite. Check out Kate Nash, I think you would like her.
Cheers,
Kim

Ah, an Oscar Wilde fan! Are you familiar with the works of the Mssrs. Tennant and Lowe, aka Pet Shop Boys?
Wilde was a huge influence on Neil Tennant’s songwriting, especially the songs “I Get Excited” and “DJ Culture”. You can look ‘em up on YouTube if you haven’t heard them – I totally recommend it!
(and that’s my “special interest plug o’ the day”
)
Love that Kate Bornstein quote.
Notes From Underground is my favorite literary book in the world. Second is The Old Man and the Sea.
I am reading The House of the Dead by Dostoyevsky right now…it’s very good so far. Have you read it?
I think about Autism all the time too. I think Autism itself is one of my special interests.
